Guilded Age- adult ref

Buttermilk adjusted to his new home quickly. He was an easygoing guy. As long as someone filled his hay net and grain bucket and said hi once in awhile he was content. He was just a nice, friendly colt all around. That made him a quick favorite of not only the grooms, but also the jockeys and guests. He had the personality of a dopey pony- not the highstrung temperament one would expect from a hormone-crazed two year old thoroughbred.

He often shared a pasture with the other young colts, and he got along with all of them- even the most aggresive, just fine. He always came when called and never spooked. It was weird really.

Buttermilk munched on a few stray wisps of hay near the wash stall as Maria worked on giving him a bath. She was helping Drew with all the unretired thoroughbreds because they all needed baths after their intense workouts in the heat. Plus, she had already finished caring for the stallions. In his purple nylon halter, instead of his elegant leather one, Buttermilk looked comically un-racehorse like.

"He's so easygoing, it's like I'm riding a freakin' two year old's pony!" Max laughed. Buttermilk was one of his new mounts, but the two were not a natural fit.

"It's cute! Plus, don't you like having at least one mount that you don't have to worry about spooking?" Maria asked, valiantly standing up for Buttermilk.

"He just doesn't have that edge. You know, like Summerlady or Rat or City even. Nothing about him screams 'look at me'. He just doesn't have that 'wow' element. Sure, he runs well- not remarkable, but decent, but he doesn't race with style."

"Pfft, you've got too big of an ego since you won all those big races on Summer and her foals. Not every horse that you ride is going to be media-friendly Triple Crown contender material like Summerlady. You don't get that Summer is a once in a lifetime mount. She's fabulous. Never seen anything like her." Maria was starting to wonder if it would be better to switch Buttermilk to one of the other jockeys. One who didn't mind a reasonable horse once in awhile.

"Ego? Me? Never. I'm probably the most humble man you'll ever meet," Max winked. What a lie.

"Ugh, you think you're so charming- I personally prefer my men to be buckskin and 'like a two year old's pony'," Maria stuck out her tongue at him and gave Buttermilk a hug around the neck, effectively becoming covered with soapy water.

"For you, baby, I could be anything." Leave it to Max to flirt in the middle of a disagreement.
