Idea Behind This:
Basically this is intended to be someone's subconscience getting the best of them in a dream. Their worst fears are popping up, and in this dream nothing needs to make sense, making it all the more terrifying.

The ocean forest is to show how dreams don't need to make sense.

As for the horses, each one symbolizes a fear- the middle one is death (the scar on its forehead is the symbol of death), the one on the right is a nightmare (and is holding a very sinister dreamcatcher, complete with bones hanging from it instead of feathers). The one on the left is fear of death itself, as the spider (another symbol of death) is forcing the horse to remain silent by spinning a web over its mouth.

Process
:bulletblack: Crop all horses
:bulletgreen: Resize bkg, alter colors a bit
:bulletblack: Position horses on bkg, resize horses
:bulletgreen: Paint/smudge manes and tails
:bulletblack: Paint their eyes (no pupils, made to look like they are fogged over and shattering, too)
:bulletgreen: Add waves to the the water
:bulletblack: Paint on the accessories (dreamcatcher, scar and spider)
:bulletgreen: Mess with the shading and colors on horses, dodge and burn some
:bulletblack: Duplicate bkg layer and gaussian blur it, set it on overlay to put the bkg colors on the horses, etc.

Thoughts
I like how this turned out, it ended up pretty much exactly how I imagined (which doesn't happen often). I think all the horses show 'insanity' quite well and that the colors and such are sufficiently haunting.
