Vakiz spooked as the crowd yelled, sidestepping and then bucking. His eyes were wide with terror and fought the bit, panicked. The crowd was used to seeing thoroughbreds nervous at the races, even after winning in Graded Stakes but they didn't know how Vakiz and his stablemates were treated. His jockey forcefully tightened the reins and jerked at the handsome young stallion's tender mouth. Blood trickled into the stallion's mouth and he lowered his head in pain. His jockey sat up and smiled to the crowd as one of the handlers came over and took Vakiz's bridle to lead him to the winner's circle.

Later, in the racetrack's stable, Vakiz nibbled at his hay halfheartedly, it hurt his sore mouth when the stiff strands poked his lips. He was exhausted but the pain was keeping him awake. He never got a rest after a race, often competing in a race per week. His owners raced their horses literally to death, and then just replaced them. The horses on both sides of Vakiz felt the same, except the striking black was in worse condition- he hadn't won his race, and had been hit with a whip, and now was headshy- any groom, even a good-intentioned one, could not get anywhere near the thin trail of blood on his cheek...

At Fanfare Farm
Fanfare Farm had been considering importing some new thoroughbred blood into the stable for awhile. There was a limit to how many breedings could be done within the farm stock before the foals would be inbred- and paying astronomical stud and lease fees was extremely expensive. It would be nice to have a few new thoroughbreds to race and then once they were retired to use for new blood in the breeding programs. Many of the farm's horses has the same physical aspects as well, causing the farm to be very exclusive in what races, distances and materials the racers could compete in.

When an auction of some imported Czech thoroughbreds was advertised, Jake was eager to go and bid on some horses. The travel time was nice, too, as Jake and Shelby had not had any alone time since their honeymoon. Plus, with all the foaling of the season finally done, they were happy to spend some time somewhere besides in a stall, kneeling in hay or shavings, even if it was just a truck pulling a horse trailer.

Upon arriving, both Shelby and Jake agreed that the horse they wanted to focus on was a handsome deep bay 2 year old stallion. All the Czech horses had come from an abusive situation and were over-raced along with physically abused. Ther young stallion had run in over 13 races in a single season, and those were just the ones that the owners wanted to record and send over with the horse's papers. The stallion had a raw mouth and was very flighty, but Jake was confident that before the colt's three year old season, he could learn to trust again.

Build: Not as thin and lanky as the traditional racehorse thoroughbred, he has thicker leg bones, a heavier head and lots of muscle. Even if not a spectacular racer, he'd be good for getting some more bone into the thoroughbred youngstock in America.
Personality: Shy and easily spooked from being abused in Czech, he does love people who are nice and gentle, craving the attention he never got. He is full of heart and doesn't try to be spooky or nervous, he just is. He takes a practiced jockey because of that, but if not a real 'difficult' horse- he has all the right intentions.
